GAS...It's the fuel behind improving fitness

Have you ever wondered how strength and conditioning programs work to improve musculoskeletal and cardiovascular health? Well, it's all based on the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS).

What is the General Adaptation Syndrome? 🤔 📈 It describes how the body responds to stimulus/stress and how it adapts over time to become more resilient.
How does the GAS relate to strength and aerobic conditioning? 🏋️‍♀️ Strength training and aerobic exercise are types of stress that challenges your body to adapt and become stronger. 🔁 The GAS principle describes three phases of adaptation that occur in response to this stress:
  1. Alarm Phase ⏰ This is the initial phase of the GAS, where your body experiences a shock to the system. 🤕 You may feel soreness or stiffness after your first few strength training sessions. 😴 Your body needs time to recover and adapt to this new stress.
  2. Resistance Phase 💪 This is the phase where your body starts to adapt to the stress. 🏋️‍♂️ Your muscles will grow stronger, and your bones and tendons will become denser and more resilient. 🔄 As you continue to challenge your body with strength training, you will continue to adapt and grow stronger.
  3. Exhaustion Phase 🛑 This is the phase where your body can no longer keep up with the stress. 🤒 If you push yourself too hard without allowing for proper recovery, you may experience injury, burnout, or other negative effects. ⏸️ It's important to listen to your body and allow for proper rest and recovery to avoid reaching this phase.

By challenging your body with this stress and allowing for proper recovery, you can continue to adapt and grow stronger over time.
